IGoogle Hot Trends and Google Trends

IGoogle, a yahoo-esqe looking attempt at personalizing Google to have weather, maps, etc to make your life easier. I admit, it is damn handy, but its cluttered, not streamlined and basic - feels wrong to have the name "Google" attached to it.

IGoogle has a plugin called "Google Hot Trends" which is just absolutely cool. Effectively it looks at all of the searches on Google and lists the top 100 searches by volume, with constant updating.

Due to this, you know about the news literally as its happening. For example, I saw that "miss california" was popular in the searches and found that shes looking to be stripped of her title due to her recent "outspokenness," or hate speech, if you prefer. The Miss America corporation is trying to save face by distancing themselves and using "contract violations" as a way out. Apparently "The Donald" still has to make his final decision, but the conclusion sounded like it was already written when the people from the Miss California Association stated they would be bringing in a replacement Miss California.

While Google Hot Trends is a neat program it pails in comparison to Google Trends, the base program that hot trends is based off of. For Google has recently released an Apple widget that allows instant checking of Google Trends for keyword research. The extreme techno geek in me is totally turned on by the SEO uses of Google's Trend lineup. Turned on enough to almost eliminate the nagging voice in the background mentioning big brother watching your every keystroke.

Youtube Pay Per Click?

I love Google. Since buying up youtube, they have since been dying to find a way to make it profitable. I recently wrote on how they intended to allow you to promote videos on a pay per click basis.

I am here to say that You Tube video promotion is money. While costly to compete on certain keywords; I discovered "fire" was a popular thing to rank for, earning me 200,000 impressions and 278 clicks in about 9 hours. Little expensive to learn that lesson at 29 bucks, but far cheaper to do than Adwords pay per click.

I have been experimenting with the videos to see what kind of traffic they bring. My Full Monty Marketing primer has about a 1% click through rate off the impressions, with about 30% of the viewers going to the main site. Not bad for a quick way to introduce your company and case studies to people interested in SEO/SEM.

Better Business Bureau SEO?

I had the good fortune of attending a BBB (Better Business Bureau) mixer here in San Diego the other night and I have nothing but good things to say about the quality of people you meet at these functions. I ran into people from all walks of life who wanted to know about what I did, what it was like, etc.

It was really nice to meet people who were genuinely interested in growing their business and were willing to meet people face to face if that's what it took to get a job.

Apparently it was not always this way, Sharon, CEO over at the BBB said that a couple of years back they couldn't get more than five people to show up at one of these functions. This year however, there must have been a hundred plus. She mentioned another interesting point - "if you link to the better business bureau, your personal company link on our website it will help your website move up the rankings on search engines."

While it is true that a link from the BBB means big page rank points, usually the difference between a PR0 and a PR1 - I doubt a reciprocal link helps you in the least. Granted, its still a reciprocal link to the BBB, but in terms of search engine optimization the word "meh" comes to mind.

But she touched a nerve with me, nothing bad, but I started thinking. Is this the trickle down effect of SEO knowledge? I think search marketing is starting to become mainstream enough that everyone has at least heard of rankings manipulation. The million dollar question however is "when will everyone jump into the search market?"

SEO San Diego

What's Full Monty doing in the San Diego SEO field? As the market pics up, Google Trends has

confirmed that people are searching for SEO again. Obviously this pertains to terms like SEO San

Diego, SEM San Diego and Internet Marketing San Diego as well, which means its time to get out

there and strut our stuff. As you can imagine based on my last post, I will be joining the Better

Business Bureau (BBB) very soon. I look forward to the next Better Business Bureau (BBB) mixer,

this time around I intend to be a lot less passive about our particular brand of SEO.

Right now our clients are expanding thier market shares by leaps and bounds based on traffic

patterns. In fact some of our clients saw traffic increases of over 200% last month. Not small

potatoes, and it begins to instill a feeling of hope about the country's economy. As you might

imagine, October's market crash put a real halt on the San Diego market's extraneous spending

and certain luxuries were cut out. Based on traffic patterns of some of my seasonal San Diego

businesses being literally 50% over their projected numbers for all of last year, I would say the

market is rebounding.

Past plans to expand, I haven't seen any real important changes in Google's ranking

mechanisms, though I have seen my blog let me out rank my competitors by eliminating my

meta description tag. I also noted that my pages without meta keyword or phrase tags are out

ranking those with. I have since switched.
