Yelp - let us decide for you

Once upon a time I was a member of yelp, a basic supporter and a fan of most of my clients, for example; the Corvette Shop of San Diego has done countless hours of amazing work to my Caddy and I love dealing with them. I would recommend that shop to anyone looking for solid LS-series engine work.

So then I got a notice saying I had been canned due to advertising on yelp. I thought yelp was a listings service for businesses, like the yellow pages, a place to advertise - but what do I know, right?

At this point reviews of my company on yelp (along with my clients reviews) were wiped clean. Do not pass go, do not collect two hundred dollars, go directly to jail.

Today, a client of mine, Happy Pest Control called me and asked why their "featured review" of Full Monty Marketing wasn't on my yelp page. I asked them when they wrote it, and Happy told me that it was brand new, maybe a week or two old. When I searched for it, it had been deleted.

Moral of the story:
No matter how well people like your company, the staff at Yelp can decide they don't want to deal with your firm and continually blackball you for no apparent reason.

Sentences working better in Google queries?

I have noticed of late that some of Full Monty's client sites are doing better since I have switched their title tags to sentences rather than keyword centric strings of phrases.

For example:
"SEO San Diego SEM and Internet Marketing - Full Monty Marketing"
has been changed to

I believe this to be one of the new changes to the algorithm (Google Caffeine) and may focus more on the branding aspect that Google has been trying to revert to. I suppose they're tired of google results that look something like a broken record; the spammy "buy viagra" searches are ending people, ethical search engine optimization and link building are mandatory in the new Google Caffeine game.

Well, that and a facebook account apparently.

    Internet Marketing for Pest Professionals

Pest control marketing solutions in a down economy!

With the yellow pages, radio, television, flyers and newspaper all unilaterally failing in today's weaker market, today's pest professionals are scrambling to regain the market share they used to control. We have the secret to successful internet marketing campaigns for pest control and termite companies and are prepared to show you what the outdated marketing mediums and the NPMA don't want you to see; extremely effective advertising with minimal investment. Happy Pest Control of San Diego signed on with us in January of 2008. Since then the company has switched gears from hemorrhaging money to being forced to add two additional routes as well as office staff. You owe it to your company to see what we can do for you.

Pest Control Search Engine Optimization Case Studies

    Client: Happy Pest Control
Industry: Pest Control (structural branch 2 California)
    URL: http://www.happypestcontrol.com
Campaign Type: Internet marketing package with link building.

    Overview:
Happy Pest Control is a San Diego based pest control company that originally started in northern California about fifteen years ago. After years of traditional paper media and advertising methods, Happy Pest Control had become stagnant in their growth. Happy’s owner admits to paying for most of his paper advertising methods with the hope that it would ad growth to the company. After reviewing the client sheets however, more than 90% of Happy Pest Control’s growth had come from client referrals.

Happy’s web site was a basic HTML format that relied heavily on image mapping for its navigation and neglected to mention any of the company’s specialties or serviced locales.

    Marketing Goals:
Happy Pest Control came to us after dealing with other search professionals. Their site rankings hadn’t changed from the other search professionals’ previous efforts. Happy not only wanted to achieve high rankings for major target terms like “pest control san diego” but also for the various pests they control as well as the cities they service.

    SEO / SEM Strategy:
We focused on Happy’s optimization in a series of stages.

Stage One: We built Happy a simple, 3 column style .php site using cascading style sheets to control the layout and color scheme. The newly designed website allowed Happy to add or subtract cities and pests at a whim without having to modify every page. This also allowed us to keep all of the layout information on another page greatly simplifying the code that the search engines have to crawl before finding the words on the page.

Stage Two: After building the site, our search engine optimization team went to work setting up pages on the site to accurately reflect the cities and pests that Happy Pest Control serviced.

Stage Three: Our search marketing team took over in stage three, building internet popularity through our ethical link building programs to compete with their already optimized competition. As the website was waiting for search engines to recognize its new found popularity, our search marketing team focused on improving Happy’s already existing advertising mediums - yahoo local, google maps, craigslist and others.

    Internet Marketing Results:
Happy Pest Control is a real example of what our search marketing expertise can do for your business. Happy’s website is now producing 90% of their business leads, they have since canceled their radio, newspaper and phone book campaigns. The website now sees 3200% more traffic than it did when we started on the project.

    Happy Pest Control’s owner and operator Steven Coy had this to say;
“I wish I ran into Full Monty a couple years back, my northern California business would have sold for a hell of a lot more. Our San Diego office is doing better than we’ve seen in 20 years and we’ve cut our advertising budget by nearly 80%. Im being forced to grow exponentially this year from all the new business. There’s no downside to working with Full Monty Marketing.”

Better Business Bureau BBB Search Engine Optimization SEO - round two.

I had the privilege of attending another San Diego Better Business Bureau (BBB) mixer in La Jolla today. Talk about beautiful, the rooftop of the La Jolla Cove Suites is an amazing place to host an event. Seaside views with palm trees and a setting sun in the background, makes you almost not want to talk to the other members about the fact you're selling search engine optimization.

Thankfully, they were nice enough to approach me most the time and ask about who or where the Full Monty was going to be displayed. Yet again, the CEO of the Better Business Bureau (BBB) dedcided to inspire the crowd with out of date search engine optimization information.

I love how SEO has a trickle down effect. A search marketing expert explains a solution to a web problem and people go around spouting that information as if it were gospel. Unfortunately, Google moves too fast for word of mouth. I was encouraged to sign up at Facebook and Twitter about six times today, because apparently that's how websites rank online.

I have yet to use twitter for pumping websites up to the top of any search engine. I am a member of facebook, I use it to connect with friends and *occasionally* I will advertise a link my friends would click on. In other words, San-Diego-Home-Improvements.com wouldn't be linked in Facebook with any real intent - because Facebookers don't care about home remodeling. They do however, care about booze. If you own a bar, Facebook is the place for you.

IGoogle Hot Trends and Google Trends

IGoogle, a yahoo-esqe looking attempt at personalizing Google to have weather, maps, etc to make your life easier. I admit, it is damn handy, but its cluttered, not streamlined and basic - feels wrong to have the name "Google" attached to it.

IGoogle has a plugin called "Google Hot Trends" which is just absolutely cool. Effectively it looks at all of the searches on Google and lists the top 100 searches by volume, with constant updating.

Due to this, you know about the news literally as its happening. For example, I saw that "miss california" was popular in the searches and found that shes looking to be stripped of her title due to her recent "outspokenness," or hate speech, if you prefer. The Miss America corporation is trying to save face by distancing themselves and using "contract violations" as a way out. Apparently "The Donald" still has to make his final decision, but the conclusion sounded like it was already written when the people from the Miss California Association stated they would be bringing in a replacement Miss California.

While Google Hot Trends is a neat program it pails in comparison to Google Trends, the base program that hot trends is based off of. For Google has recently released an Apple widget that allows instant checking of Google Trends for keyword research. The extreme techno geek in me is totally turned on by the SEO uses of Google's Trend lineup. Turned on enough to almost eliminate the nagging voice in the background mentioning big brother watching your every keystroke.

    Youtube Pay Per Click?

I love Google. Since buying up youtube, they have since been dying to find a way to make it profitable. I recently wrote on how they intended to allow you to promote videos on a pay per click basis.

I am here to say that You Tube video promotion is money. While costly to compete on certain keywords; I discovered "fire" was a popular thing to rank for, earning me 200,000 impressions and 278 clicks in about 9 hours. Little expensive to learn that lesson at 29 bucks, but far cheaper to do than Adwords pay per click.

I have been experimenting with the videos to see what kind of traffic they bring. My Full Monty Marketing primer has about a 1% click through rate off the impressions, with about 30% of the viewers going to the main site. Not bad for a quick way to introduce your company and case studies to people interested in SEO/SEM.

    Better Business Bureau SEO?

I had the good fortune of attending a BBB (Better Business Bureau) mixer here in San Diego the other night and I have nothing but good things to say about the quality of people you meet at these functions. I ran into people from all walks of life who wanted to know about what I did, what it was like, etc.

It was really nice to meet people who were genuinely interested in growing their business and were willing to meet people face to face if that's what it took to get a job.

Apparently it was not always this way, Sharon, CEO over at the BBB said that a couple of years back they couldn't get more than five people to show up at one of these functions. This year however, there must have been a hundred plus. She mentioned another interesting point - "if you link to the better business bureau, your personal company link on our website it will help your website move up the rankings on search engines."

While it is true that a link from the BBB means big page rank points, usually the difference between a PR0 and a PR1 - I doubt a reciprocal link helps you in the least. Granted, its still a reciprocal link to the BBB, but in terms of search engine optimization the word "meh" comes to mind.

But she touched a nerve with me, nothing bad, but I started thinking. Is this the trickle down effect of SEO knowledge? I think search marketing is starting to become mainstream enough that everyone has at least heard of rankings manipulation. The million dollar question however is "when will everyone jump into the search market?"

    SEO San Diego

What's Full Monty doing in the San Diego SEO field? As the market pics up, Google Trends has

confirmed that people are searching for SEO again. Obviously this pertains to terms like SEO San

Diego, SEM San Diego and Internet Marketing San Diego as well, which means its time to get out

there and strut our stuff. As you can imagine based on my last post, I will be joining the Better

Business Bureau (BBB) very soon. I look forward to the next Better Business Bureau (BBB) mixer,

this time around I intend to be a lot less passive about our particular brand of SEO.

Right now our clients are expanding thier market shares by leaps and bounds based on traffic

patterns. In fact some of our clients saw traffic increases of over 200% last month. Not small

potatoes, and it begins to instill a feeling of hope about the country's economy. As you might

imagine, October's market crash put a real halt on the San Diego market's extraneous spending

and certain luxuries were cut out. Based on traffic patterns of some of my seasonal San Diego

businesses being literally 50% over their projected numbers for all of last year, I would say the

    market is rebounding.

Past plans to expand, I haven't seen any real important changes in Google's ranking

mechanisms, though I have seen my blog let me out rank my competitors by eliminating my

meta description tag. I also noted that my pages without meta keyword or phrase tags are out

ranking those with. I have since switched.

Youtube becomes a cash cow for Google

Google semi recently bought You Tube and has been spending the entire time trying to figure out how to make money off of the website. Unfortunately a website with that kind of traffic that streams video is going to use millions of terabytes of bandwidth and thus is going to cost a damn fortune.

More recently, Google has started adding video to its search results allowing people to use video to usurp other competitors with clever, most often watched videos. A fantastic example of a company doing this is Blendtec. If you haven't seen a Blendtec blender commercial, youre in for a treat. Hockey sticks, marbles, cell phones, magnets... nothing is a match for this 220v powered blender that needs to be bolted to a counter to keep it from literally flying away.

Google apparently saw the Blendtec videos too, because now you can promote videos on YouTube's main page and *for a nominal fee* your video can be put on the main page in a pay per click fashion. Effectively turning YouTube into a pay per click driven advertising source - similar to television. Its a brilliant idea that allows a much more effective conveyance of ideas and product than 25 characters across the top of a SERP. Kudos Google and Youtube on being brilliant, yet again.

    San Diego Painters Need SEO!

MM Painting Services has been a facet of northern county San Diego home remodeling world for over twenty years. In recent months however, they began to see a steep decline in the number of leads their old school methods of marketing had provided. Full Monty to the rescue!

House Painting San Diego - Optimized

"I began M.M. Painting Services over 20 years ago in order to make the homes of San Diego express their inner beauty. A new client’s house is like a blank canvas. I enjoy helping home owners express themselves through the quality and attention to detail that my crew and I use to improve their houses,” said owner and operator Marcio Marcos upon the launch of his new website.

M.M. Painting Services began as a family business in North County San Diego when ,Marcio was licensed by the CSLB. Over the past 20 years the company has never once received a citation or suspension from the California State Licensing Board, nor have any claims been made against the required bond. Alberto Hernandez, one of their trusted journeymen, has been employed by with them since 1990, demonstrating the loyalty between employer and employee. “We are very conscious of the environmental impact of the painting industry. We use water based products whenever possible and always check for low VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds).”

M.M. Painting Services takes care of interiors, exteriors, cabinets and custom finishes. They also power wash and stain. There is much about painting that the average customer may not know: What kind of preparation is needed for exterior painting? When is painting primer appropriate? What is the best paint for a kitchen, a bathroom or deck? San Diego home owners often have questions about paint color matching as well. The experienced house painters on their staff are experts with all the answers. They take every precaution necessary to protect personal property. Painting interiors often requires attention to fine detail - masking and covering areas not to be painted; while painting exteriors can mean sanding and power washing. “We hope our new website will help us to better serve San Diego as we step into a more advanced age.”

Pest Control Internet Marketing Blows Everything Else Away

With the yellow pages, radio, television, flyers and newspaper all unilaterally failing in today's market, today's pest professionals are scrambling to regain the market share they used to control. We have the secret to successful internet marketing campaigns for pest control and termite companies and are prepared to show you what the outdated marketing mediums don't want you to see; extremely effective advertising with minimal investment. Happy Pest Control of San Diego signed on with us in January of 2008. In 9 months time the company has switched gears from hemorrhaging money to being forced to add two additional routes! You owe it to your company to see what we can do for you.

    Here's a copy of Happy's press release.

    Happy Pest Control Website Release

San Diego, California (PRWEB) February 22, 2008 -- Happy Pest Control of San Diego launched their new website last week in an effort to better arm home owners and business owners with information as to what pests they may be dealing with. "Happy's old website, while functional in the traditional sense, was not up to par with the needed amount of information today's user demands. We want to provide positive solutions in pest control service and well as inform people of how their pests think," said Happy Pest Control branch manager Micah Coy.

Upon exploration of the San Diego-based pest control company's website, the user will find several pages dedicated to every type of pest that could inhabit a home. Informational pages for users outside of the San Diego area are available as well, including a series of questions to ask a pest control company, a page about integrated pest management or "IPM" and even a page with entertaining pest control-related videos and pictures.

The author learned that the ants seen commonly in his own kitchen are actually Argentine Ants, which were brought over from South America and now have overrun almost every native ant species in the United States. The website went on to further explain how Happy takes care of ant infestations using low toxicity pesticides to ensure peace of mind.

"99 percent of all cockroach infestations we service are German cockroaches. Which are the hardest pest to control, hands down. We have a three pronged approach which uses gel bait, growth regulator and pesticide." -- Micah Coy

The three-pronged approach Mr. Coy speaks of is a gel bait containing fipronil. Today's gel baits are specially scented to entice the cockroaches. Growth regulator is a chemical agent that disrupts the roaches hormones leaving pest unable to breed as well as "molt." In effect a cockroach sheds its skin like a snake in order to grow.

Rodent control has changed much since its genesis. Up until the 1940s, arsenic, cyanide and other very lethal toxins were used in rat poison. However, in 1948, the sweet clover plant was synthetically reproduced to produce a very effective anticoagulant similar to today's rat bait of choice: Bromodiolone. "When ingested the rat's vitamin K1 reductase is blocked, a necessary factor in blood clotting. This process turns the rat into a hemophiliac. As the final stages of the rodenticide take effect, the rat becomes extremely thirsty, typically seeking sources of water outside that are normally available to it." -- Happy Pest Control website
